If you’re about to start orthodontic treatment at Kanning Orthodontics in Liberty or Kansas City or are considering it, you’re probably wondering how much it’s going to hurt. It’s a fair question, and while some discomfort is involved, it’s not the unbearable pain some people make it out to be. Thankfully, it’s temporary, manageable, and nothing that should stop you from getting the results you want.
Dr. Neil Kanning can help with what you can expect and how to handle any soreness along the way.
What Kind of Discomfort Should You Expect?
The truth is, orthodontic treatment isn’t painful in the way you might think. Clear aligners and LightForce clear braces both apply gentle pressure so they can guide your teeth into place. The experience can vary from one person to another.
With clear aligners, you may notice some mild pressure when you switch to a new set; however, because they’re removable, any initial awkwardness is usually short-lived. LightForce clear braces can cause a little soreness after adjustments and as teeth shift. With both treatment options, any uncomfortable feeling shouldn’t stick around too long.
Most people notice soreness within the first few hours. This can last a few days but fades as their mouths adapt. What’s happening is simple: your teeth are shifting, and that movement creates pressure on the bone and ligaments. It’s normal, temporary, and a sign that your treatment is working. But that doesn’t mean you just have to suffer through it.
Easy Ways to Manage Orthodontic Pain
While you can’t completely avoid discomfort, there are plenty of ways to make it easier on yourself.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers – Taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen before your appointment can help reduce soreness before it starts. Just be sure to follow dosage instructions.
- Cold compress – Applying an ice pack to the outside of your mouth can help numb soreness.
- Soft foods – The first few days after a new aligner, your teeth might be extra sensitive. Stick to foods that don’t require a lot of chewing, like yogurt, mashed potatoes, or scrambled eggs.
- Oral numbing gel – If a specific spot is extra sore, a numbing gel like Orajel can temporarily dull the area.
- Orthodontic wax – Some people may find the brackets from the LightForce braces minorly irritating at first. Orthodontic wax usually does the trick to stop any discomfort.
Not every trick will work the same for everyone, so experiment and see what helps you the most.
How Long Does Orthodontic Pain Last?
Most soreness fades within 24 to 72 hours, with the first day being the most noticeable. Some people barely feel anything after treatment, while others might experience tenderness when biting down. It really depends on your pain tolerance and how your body responds to tooth movement.
What Helps Discomfort the Most?
Dr. Neil and our team at Kanning Orthodontics recommend the following:
- Taking pain relievers before your appointment
- Sticking to soft foods for a day or two
- Avoiding anything too crunchy or chewy that could put extra strain on sore teeth
- Applying a cold compress if needed
It also helps to remind yourself that this is temporary—your teeth are moving, which means treatment is working.
Small Adjustments Can Make a Big Difference
Pain isn’t just about the LightForce clear braces, aligners or other treatments themselves. Sometimes, tiny changes in your routine can make things much more comfortable.
- Massage your gums – Gently rubbing your gums in a circular motion can increase blood flow and ease tension.
- Stay hydrated – Dry mouth can worsen soreness, so drink plenty of water.
- Be careful with your toothbrush – If your teeth feel extra sensitive, switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush and use gentle motions.
These little tweaks won’t eliminate soreness completely, but they can improve your daily mood.
